The US led calls on Monday to allocate worldwide a prime tranche ofthe radio frequency spectrum for use by digital television, in a movethat backers believe will create a multi billion-dollar market for thattechnology.
On the opening day of a month-long conference at theInternational Telecommunication Union (ITU), US delegation leaderRichard Russell said it was important that countries identify frequencybands to be used exclusively for advanced wireless services.
Washingtonis particularly interested in getting the 700MHz band allocated forsuch technology in advance of the replacement of analogue televisionwith digital services in the United States in 2009. The UK hasallocated a wider range of frequencies for digital TV use, but whichspan the 700MHz region.
"It's excellent spectrum to use for all sorts of different applications," Russell told reporters in Geneva.
"Irrespectiveof when individual countries are actually going to make the move fromanalogue to digital, if we identify the TV bands now, specifically the700 band, we will be ready when that transition occurs with more newtechnologies, more new services, and a lower price," he said.
Identifyingfrequency space for digital television and other wireless technologieswould act as an incentive for companies to develop such products for aglobal market, Russell said.
He estimated the market value offreeing up spectrum space could be worth $10 billion to $15 billion inthe US alone. "It is extremely valuable," Russell said.
Many ofthe most important decisions in the ITU conference, which will alsolook at efforts to prevent interference between frequencies as well asissues affecting meteorology, maritime distress and safety, andaeronautical systems, are expected to take place in the week before itsconclusion on November 16. |
