Notevery company in gadgetdom goes for the whiz-bang stuff. Take Marvell,for example. It does something that's unsexy but entirely desirable: itmakes power bricks smaller. Announcing its latest "digital power factorcorrection technology" this week, its technology could cut electricitybills, shrink form factors and save the whales.
There's a reason why you never get to see power cords for stuff in ads: because they often account the much of the unit's truevolume. An ATX power supply might occupy a tenth of a case's space. AUMPC's power brick might approach half the size of the machine itself.A cellphone's recharger might be bigger than the phone itself.
Marvell's approach replaces numerous discrete components typicallyfound in power supplies with a single DSP-based controller chip.Versions aimed at notebooks and desktops will go on sale to therelevant channels next year.

SantaClara, California (November 5, 2007) — Marvell (NASDAQ:MRVL) todayannounced energy efficient digital power factor correction technologyfor power supplies that is designed to cut PC energy use and, helpreduce the carbon footprint by reducing the need to add more powerplants. Based on Marvell’s digital signal processing (DSP) and powermanagement expertise, these new chips boost energy efficiency byaligning the current and voltage coming from the electrical outlet foroptimal energy use by the PC. Today, more than half the power from theoutlet is wasted as heat.
The US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) estimates that there are more than 10 billion AC-DC powersupplies used in computing, telecommunications, and consumerelectronics worldwide. According to the EPA, more efficient powersupply designs could significantly reduce U.S energy use, saving nearly$3 billion and about 24 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions peryear.
“At Marvell, we are committed to green technology that willreduce our collective carbon footprint and slow the rate of climatechange,” said Hubie Notohamiprodjo, general manager, Industrial Controland Power Management, Marvell Semiconductor. “As both a supplier anduser of energy efficient technology and a sponsor of the Climate SaversComputing Initiative, we are actively engaged in developing productsthat will save energy in electronic devices as well as implementingenergy savings in our facilities. In addition to the current focus onpower supplies for PCs, Marvell’s smart energy efficient technologycould eventually be used in internal and external power supplies for awide range of consumer electronics including flat screen TVs, homeentertainment products, and portable devices.”
Marvell’s costeffective, DSP-based AC-DC controller chips allow power-supplymanufacturers to eliminate up to 20 discrete components. Not only doesthis reduce design complexity, increase reliability, and drive downmanufacturing costs, it also slims down today’s notebook adapter bricksin weight and size.   The Marvell 88EM8041 controller chip for notebookadapters and the Marvell 88EM8011 controller chip for desktop powersupplies are in production now with  volume ramp slated for Q1’08.
