Italian site Morse.itreports that Vodafone has signed an agreement with Apple for theexclusive distribution rights to 3G iPhone UMTS. The UMTS iPhone 3Gwill be launched next spring, simultaneously in all countries whereVodafone operates.
The new 3G UMTS iPhone should be announced after Christmas, or earlynext year (Macworld Expo?), so as not to negatively impact Christmassales of the current generation iPhone.
This story resonates well with The Register report about 3G iPhone launch next spring, and Morse.it has reported the news already last week.
But it is contradicted by the news about Vodafone Germany suing T-Mobileover exclusive iPhone distribution rights. On the other hand the suitmight have been a negotiations ploy and the may be dropped now, if theexclusive agreement was indeed signed.
And wouldn’t this violate distribution agreements with current iPhone carriers? Apparently not. O2, T-Mobile and others should be checking their contracts pronto. According to Morse, they cover only iPhones with Edge/GPRS…
Well, just as with the European launch of the original iPhone, lot’s of contradicting info flying around. And this is only a start, you can expect much more of it in the coming months. |
