MACAU (MarketWatch) -- China Unicom Ltd. is willing to hold talks with Apple Inc. to bring the popular iPhone to China, a company executive said Wednesday.
AAPL to bring the popular iPhone to China, a company executive said Wednesday.
"It seems that iPhone is hot in some markets. We are willing to discusswith Apple," Li Zhengmao, executive director and vice president ofChina Unicom told Dow Jones Newswires on the sidelines of the GSMAMobile Asia Congress in Macau.
The executive, however, said the company hasn't held talks with Apple yet.
"We are interested in discussing," Li said, without elaborating.
China Unicom's rival China Mobile Ltd. said Tuesday it was in talks with Apple to bring the iPhone to China.
China unlikely to see Apple's iPhone soon: execs
"Right now, we don't have any plans to introduce Apple's iPhones inChina," Unicom Executive Director Li Zhengmao told reporters onWednesday.
"But of course, we're always willing to discuss a goodbusiness opportunity if it presents itself," he said. "As for whetherwe'll talk about iPhones with Apple, you'll have to ask Apple."
Lisaid he could not judge whether Apple's iPhone would gain a widefollowing eventually, but said it would need to support text messagingin Chinese language to be accepted.
The iPhone, a cellphone thataccesses the Internet and plays music, moves for about US$500 in theUnited States -- about double the average monthly salary in China.
"As long as there is a good product and a good business, we are always willing to talk, and find common ground," Li added.
Gartneranalyst Sandy Shen said it might be premature to start factoring in thelaunch of the iPhone for China, not least because of the high price thedevice would command, and because China Mobile would resist departingfrom age-old practices.
"It's going to be just for the high-end users, a very niche product, for niche users," she said.
"Forthe iPhone, they're asking for sharing of the monthly fee, includingthe voice charge as well," she added. "This has never been done inChina before. I'm not sure whether China Mobile would be willing toshare a total monthly fee."
Shen added that, unlike in the UnitedStates, where Apple operates a popular "iTunes" song-download service,Chinese users might be left bereft of content initially.
